About Río Camuy Trip

Discovered in 1962 by Russell an Jeanne Gurnee, Río Camuy Cave system has been visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, but only a few of those have seen the caves in their natural state.  Far away from the cement walkways and the trolleys of the    commercial cave park, our trip takes us to Cueva       Resurgencia or resurgence.  The name meaning that this is Rio Camuy's last underground stretch before           resurfacing on its way to the Atlantic Ocean!

Our trip starts at Don Juan's house, a local farmer that has been the unofficial custodian and guardian of the  access to this natural wonder.  After gearing up, the group hikes down old farmlands and into a pristine    secondary forest.  The hike leads to the rappelling area where a basic instruction on the vertical technique is given.   "On Rope!", a 65 feet rappel down the side of the river canyon and next to a roaring waterfall.  After the descend, the canyoneering starts!  Maneuvering through rocks and waterfalls, the group reaches the cave entrance.  In the cave we scramble, climb, boulder, and squeeze through "swiss cheese" rock formations.  The route for exiting the cave is an impressive underground river passage where we use the Río Camuy's power to bodyraft ourselves towards daylight.   Lunch time will be spent inside the cave!  Our journey ends with a energizing hike back to the staging area.
